Minutes for the DFW Scrollers Meeting
Saturday, 10-25-08

Harmon Atkins called the meeting to order at 9:30AM with 11 members present.
Harmon asked if there were any changes to the September minutes as posted on the DFW Scrollers web site. Clara stated that on page 2 item C was incorrect. She, Clara had asked how to cut words into projects. She has a hard time seeing and staying on the black line. Faye suggested using red and blue  for contrast.   Faye then made a motion to accept the amended minutes from the September meeting. The motion was seconded and carried by the members present.
Lavern gave the treasurer’s report.
Harmon then explained that Rockler had changed its policies regarding discounts.  After discussions at Rocker it was agreed they would give discounts only to members of wood working clubs.  We will need to show our membership cards, at the time of the sale, in order to get a 10% discount.
Anyone having further items to be donated for the Christmas project, can deliver them to Harmon. He has to turn in all items to his church by the end of November.
Faye stated that she also works with Cowboy Santa in Fort Worth and they also can use donated toys or items at this time of year. Just contact her for delivery.
Glen Edwards suggested that a picture be made with some of the members with the toys before they are delivered to the church.  He explained that we need to let the local papers know of our projects in order to get some free advertising.
Lyndal gave an update on the scroll saw picnic scheduled for April 17-18, 2009. Several vendors have committed, but others are waiting to see if business picks up enough to allow them to make the trip.  The dinner has been scheduled for Friday night using the same caterer from the 2008 picnic. Due to a added expenses the dinner tickets will increase to $18.00 per person.  Lyndal  is not taking advance ticket sales yet.
Lyndal also stated that the picnic in Wisconsin had a separate room with different types of saws set up.  Since vendors are having problems attending due to budget crunches, this would allow attendees to try different saws.  It was also suggested that we have some trucks or toys set up that people could cut which would help us get a head start on next year’s project.

ASK THE EXPERTS
Tom questioned the size of blade to be used on the trucks and cars being cut for our Christmas project. He was having trouble getting a good cut on the windows. Several people suggested using a 7 or 9 but it was also explain how to get a clear cut at the edge of the windows.
Glen Gideon asked about the color differences of purple heart.  He was having a problem with the color becoming clouded or dulled. We all discussed that when finished the color will return in most cases. It was also discussed that on MSN an article explained that if purple heart wood was kept in the dark that it will lose color, but in some cases ,if put in sunlight the color will be restored.  We all agreed that nothing was 100% when discussing purple heart.
Jo Ann questioned using tape on the back of projects to cut down on splintering.  Some used clear packing tape, but found it was hard to get off. Most used blue painter’s tape.  Jo Ann stated that she tried gluing a piece of paper on the back –just like putting the pattern on top—then adding clear packing tape over the paper.  After cutting she found that the tape comes off much easier, even when cutting delicate fretwork .
Several of the members are having problems using spiral blades in their saws. Lyndal showed us 2/0 spiral blades from different companies.   Lyndal said that he uses the Flying Dutchman the majority of the time, unless he needs very fine details, then uses the smaller Olson blades.
(1) Olson 2/0 blades are 30,000 in size
(2) Flying Dutchman 2/0 are 24,000
Lavern stated that she prefers and uses Seyco platinum series blades.  She said that they are higher in price, but worth the added expense for the smoothness she gets while cutting.  Faye and Jo Ann agreed.
Rick stated that he purchased a sander with a very narrow belt for sanding that was excellent for our delicate work.  He thinks it was a Black and Decker, but not positive. These can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowe’s.

BRAG TABLE
Lyndal brought (1) a  snowman clock—very cute,  (2) Word “Peace on Earth” cut from unfinished cedar  (3) a cross from mesquite and dipped in ½ mineral spirits and ½ boiled linseed oil. He explained that it is less expensive than Danish oil for a natural finish. He then sprayed it with Deft spray.
Rick brought (1)  Walnut cross with dove overlay  (2) multilayered plaques (a) one of Holidays spirits (b) and one of a military emblem.  (3) a box with a police emblem belt buckle made into the top.  He had purchased a metal buckle, taken the hook from the back and made the whole on the box top to match the shape of the buckle.  All his projects were beautiful and different.
Faye had several projects that were compound cuts using Diana Thompson’s books.  She also suggested that the small pieces be glued onto wood bases in order to give them stability and avoid breakage. She also used a spiral blade to cut sea horses.

DEMO   Faye gave a demo on compound cutting showing both the taping method and clamping method.  Her demo was very well planned and provided us information to help further our scrolling.

SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE DEMOS
Lyndal suggested having a demo by an expert on “Scrolling and your health”. This may be done by a doctor to discuss how sawdust and finishing products effect our lungs.  Also get a doctor to discuss how to set up our saws to eliminate back and neck problems.
If any of you want to learn certain skills, let us know and we will get a demo set up.  We all can learn from each other. We have several demos set up for the next meetings.
